Crullers
O.k..so I admit it, darn it. Tartelette got me on a donut binge. Here are the crullers I made for breakfast on Sunday. I made crullers the old fashioned way by rolling strips of dough around a rounded handle. I actually used my knife sharpener for this and it worked great. After rolling it around the handle or whatever, you gently slip it into the oil...and voila...donut ringlets.
Crullers
2 eggs beaten
1 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla, or lemon
1 c. milk
2 tbsp. melted butter
4 c. flour
4 tsp. baking powder
Heat fryer to 365.
Mix in order given. Knead dough lightly on floured board. Roll to 1/4 inch thick and cut into strips. Roll strips around a wood spoon handle or dowel, and slip from the handle gently into in deep fat.
Draina nd dust with sugar or confectioners sugar.

I would have never thought to do them this way - brilliant!
thanks deborah. Originally doughnuts were done this way because they turned themselves in the oil, saving the cook the trouble of turning them. In fact, that is why the donuts we know as donuts wiht the holes are called sinkers ..because they don't flip themselves as the come up!
I like the sound of that "doughnut ringlets". :D
Well, Valli, I was of the generatio that had to sit for long periods of time while my mom ringleted my hair. :P
I couldn't think of anything else to call them!
OMG Marye, I'm trying to lose weight!!!
Yum yum yum. I think it's in Farmer's Boy (Laura Ingalls Wilder) that Ma dismisses the new-fangled fashion of ring doughnuts because she doesn't have time to faff turning them over. I've never seen them like this in the flesh though. I want one!
I want to make these for my daughter's school birthday in the morning. Do you think I could make the dough at night and let it rest in the fridge? Thanks
We just made them - great recipe! They taste like the "fair mini donuts" Yum :)
